Leclerc Wins After Antonelli’s Drama

Charles Leclerc controlled the race from lights out to the chequered flag to secure victory in F1 British GP, overcoming a late Safety Car that reshuffled the order behind him. Lewis Hamilton’s five-second time penalty and Kimi Antonelli’s heartbreaking issue played decisive roles as George Russell inherited second place, with Hamilton completing the podium.

Charles Leclerc made a perfect start to take the lead into Turn 1, while Lewis Hamilton moved into second place ahead of Kimi Antonelli, who settled into third.

The Monegasque immediately established the pace, gradually building an advantage over Hamilton. Behind them, Antonelli remained within striking distance of the seven-time world champion before making his move on lap 11. The Mercedes rookie overtook Hamilton for second place, although he still trailed Leclerc by 4.1 seconds.

Hamilton’s race became more complicated after stewards investigated him for moving before the start signal. The Ferrari driver was handed a five-second time penalty, further reducing his chances of challenging his teammate for victory.

During the opening third of the race, the gaps remained relatively stable, with Leclerc comfortably leading Antonelli and Hamilton.

The pit stop phase began on lap 24 when Hamilton became the first of the frontrunners to switch to hard tyres. He rejoined in sixth place, temporarily dropping behind George Russell.

Leclerc responded one lap later, also fitting hard tyres. Antonelli inherited the race lead briefly before Leclerc emerged back onto the circuit in second.

As the strategy unfolded, Hamilton found himself in an intense battle with Russell for fourth place while both drivers closed in on Max Verstappen. Mercedes later instructed Russell to reduce his pace before the Briton was forced to make an additional pit stop on lap 34, allowing Hamilton to continue his pursuit of Verstappen.

Antonelli made his own stop on lap 35, handing the lead back to Leclerc. The order became Leclerc, Antonelli, Verstappen and Hamilton. Three laps later, Hamilton completed a decisive overtake on Verstappen to move into third.

With 16 laps remaining, Antonelli began to reduce Leclerc’s advantage, cutting the gap from 7.7 seconds as he looked capable of mounting a late challenge. Antonelli’s pace seemed fastly and the victory was reachable this time.

However, disaster struck on lap 41. Antonelli suddenly slowed with a broken wheel shield and was forced to return to the pits, ending what had been an impressive drive.

Another dramatic twist came on lap 48 when Verstappen retired, triggering a Safety Car. Ferrari took the opportunity to pit both of its drivers for fresh tyres, but the neutralisation allowed Russell to jump ahead of Hamilton during the pit sequence and claim second place.

The race never returned to green-flag conditions, with the final laps completed behind the Safety Car.

Leclerc crossed the finish line to claim a commanding victory after leading the majority of the race. Russell finished second after benefiting from the late Safety Car, while Hamilton recovered to third despite his earlier penalty. Antonelli was left to wonder what might have been after a superb performance ended in mechanical disappointment and did not score a point according to a 5-seconds time penalty on track limits.
