Italian GP Friday: Hamilton, Leclerc lead FP1, Norris tops FP2

Ferrari drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc topped F1 Free Practice 1 at Monza. Meanwhile Lando Norris was the fastest on FP2. Full FP1 and FP2 results, and highlights from the 2025 Italian GP’s Friday of Pirelli’s 500th Formula 1 weekend.

FP1

Alexander Dunne drove for McLaren and Paul Aron drove for Alpine in the first free practice session. In this way, the world championship leader Oscar Piastri, and Franco Colapinto were missed the FP1. As is customary at Monza, everyone prepared for the weekend with lower wings and the teams began working on perfecting the settings with these special parts.

The 60-minutes practice session, certainly did not reflect the realistic balance of power, as Hamilton (1:20.117) was only 1 tenth of a second faster than Leclerc on medium tires, while Carlos Sainz finished third. The defending world champion Max Verstappen finished 4th, while Lando Norris 6th in the first practice session.

FP2

The drivers started on medium and hard tyres in the early stage of the second 60 minutes, where Piastri and Colapinto sat back in the cars. After the first flying laps were completed, Norris and Piastri were standing in 1-2, meanwhile Kimi Antonelli got stuck in Lesmo 2 corner’s gravel.

After the red flag period, the track’s grip got better and better as well as the timekeeper was running, it meant everybody changed the tyres to softer compounds at halftime of the session. During the faster laps Norris led (1:19.878), but the Ferraris were closing the gap. Like the FP1, Sainz was a surprise as he was standing close to the leaders. After it the drivers modified the setups and completed race stints, therefore the results did not change. Norris was the fastest, followed by Leclerc and Sainz.
